Apr 1, 2024 · The Western genre in film and TV refers to a category of stories set in the American Old West, typically in the late 19th century, which portray the frontier life, the clash between law and order and the lawless, and the individualism of the characters.
Television Westerns are programs with settings in the later half of the 19th century in the American Old West, Western Canada and Mexico during the period from about 1860 to the end of the so-called "Indian Wars".
- 'Justified' (2010 - 2015) No one's quite as smooth and charming when they gun you down as Kentucky U.S Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant). This modern take on Westerns trades out horses for trucks and outlaws for meth dealers but keeps the cowboy hats and all the lawless fun of the Western genre.
- 'Deadwood' (2004 - 2006) HBO has been creating hit shows since The Sopranos. When the show about a dysfunctional family of mobsters became a smash hit, HBO turned its eyes toward demystifying the Wild West with another hit show, Deadwood.
