El Calafate, also called Calafate, is a city in the Argentine province of Santa Cruz, in Patagonia. It is located on the southern border of Lago Argentino, in the southwest part of the province (about 320 kilometres (200 mi) northwest of Río Gallegos).
- Perito Moreno Glacier. Perhaps the biggest tourist attraction in the area, you have to venture out to Perito Moreno Glacier to have a look at this 70-meters-thick slab of brilliant blue ice.
- Cerro Frías. Cerro Frías is a hill located just 22 km away from El Calafate within the expansive Patagonian Steppe. Because it’s not surrounded by tons of other mountains, Cerro Frías is an epic viewpoint 1,300 meters high from which visitors can see Mount Fitz Roy, Torres del Paine, and Lago Argentino.
- Taste the Local Specialties. For an outdoorsy town, there are a surprising amount of upscale restaurants here. Patagonian lamb is the local specialty, so be sure to try some while you’re here – either costillas de cordero (rack of lamb) or bife de cordero (lamb steak).

Nov 7, 2023 · As the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park, El Calafate is one of Patagonia’s most popular destinations. It’s best known as the luxury base for visiting the Perito Moreno Glacier, arguably the most magnificent glacier not only in Los Glaciares but in all of Patagonia.
- Walk the Perito Moreno Boardwalk. One of the best and most popular things to do in El Calafate is to visit the Perito Moreno Glacier boardwalk. Besides the entrance fee to Los Glaciares National Park (800 ARS/ $5.50 USD), the boardwalk is completely free!
- Drink Locally Brewed Craft Beer. When I said there are plenty of things to do in El Calafate after long days filled with adventure, I meant it! And what could be better than finishing off the day with a few locally brewed and delicious craft beers?!
- Go Glacier Trekking. One thing I always regretted on my first visit to El Calafate was not going glacier trekking. To me, trekking on the Perito Moreno Glacier was high on my bucket list as it’s the most impressive glacier I’ve ever seen.
- Visit Intendencia Parque Nacional Los Glaciares. This is a very quick and enjoyable thing to do in El Calafate. The Intendencia Parque Nacional Los Glaciares has lots of historical information on Perito Moreno (the explorer) as well as beautiful gardens to enjoy.
- Visit Perito Moreno Glacier. The number one thing to do in El Calafate is to visit the Perito Moreno Glacier. This is one of the largest glaciers in Patagonia, starting high in the Andes Mountains from the Southern Patagonian Icefield and flowing down to Lago Argentino.
- Go Glacier Trekking. I went on a glacier mini-trekking tour and had a blast — if it’s in your budget, it’s easily one of the best things to do in El Calafate.
- Explore Perito Moreno Glacier by Kayak. Ever gone kayaking in a cold area? As someone who has kayaked in Antarctica and Greenland, I highly recommend it!
- Go on a Full Day Glacier Cruise on Lake Argentina. Many of the tours to Perito Moreno Glacier include a short navigational boat tour. But if you’re looking to spend more time on Lake Argentina, you’ll want to join a full day glacier cruise.
