Nanabhai Bhatt was married to Hemlata Bhatt. However, he had a notorious affair with a Gujarati Muslim woman named Shirin Mohammad Ali in the 1940s. He had nine children from both his wife and mistress, including filmmakers Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt (with Shirin).
Nanabhai Bhatt (born Nrusinhprasad Kalidas Bhatt; 11 November 1882 – 31 December 1961) was an Indian educator, writer, thinker and Indian independence activist. Bhatt was a contemporary of educators Gijubhai Badheka and Harbhai Trivedi. The three worked to advance rural education. Bhatt died on 31 December 1961.

Nanabhai Bhatt were a great thinker and reformist. His vision, innovations and contribution towards the cause of Education attracted the position of Vice Chancellor at Gujarat Vidyapith and he served the Vidyapith during 1925-1928 as Vice Chancellor of Gujarat Vidyapith.
It was known that Gandhi used to visit him frequently and discuss private things with him that were not to be discussed with anyone else.
