When we have a main orthographic view in a scale that does not allow all the features to be clearly represented, we can use a detailed view to enlarge these details. The detailed view is one of the elements you will often use when creating the engineering drawing.

Inside the circle, there is a reference number or letter referring to the elevation drawing number or letter, and underneath this, is the drawing sheet number where that elevation can be found.
An elevation shows a vertical surface seen from a point of view perpendicular to the viewers picture plane. For example if you stand directly in front of a building and view the front of the building, you are looking at the front elevation.
