Urretxu (Spanish, Villareal de Urrechu) is a town located in the province of Gipuzkoa, in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country, northern Spain. Situated on the Urola river, it is contiguous with the larger town of Zumarraga immediately to the south, with the river making the boundary between them.
Urretxu is known as the hometown of Basque poet J ose María Iparraguirre, famous for its song "Gernikako Arbola" -the most international Basque hymn-. Located near Zumarraga, Urretxu is situated in Alto Urola region, upon the river Urola and sheltered by the Irimo Mountain (896 m).
