Maracanã, officially called Estádio Mário Filho, was built to serve as the flagship venue for the 1950 World Cup. It was meant to become the biggest football stadium in the world. Construction began in August 1948 and was completed almost two years later.
As a football fan of many years to visit the Maracanã was a dream come true! It was good to sample the atmosphere of a typical Brazilian football match. Now all the standing areas have been filled in with plastic seats, but it’s easy to imagine what it would have been like with 150,000 + crowds yesteryear.
