[1] It was produced and distributed by Universal-International Pictures. [2] It is based on the 1956 novel Back Trail by Lewis B. Patten and had the working title Decision At Durango.
User Reviews. After hooking up with old time gunfighter James Millican, younger gunfighter Rory Calhoun decides he'd better look for a different line of work himself. Especially after Millican dies holding off a pair of brothers out to get them. But it's not so easy when the only trade you know is a fast draw.

Overview. When his life is saved in a shootout by a fellow gunman whose life he in turn had saved, Alex Longmire promises to give up his way of life. Riding into town he finds the only job available is deputy to sheriff Jade Murphy, an honest man caught between small farmers and a local cattle baron. And he has a pretty daughter.

Red Sundown was well written by Martin Berkeley, sadly famous for having ‘named’ more Hollywood colleagues than anyone else to the HUAC, but a very capable screenplay writer for Westerns from Green Grass of Wyoming (1948) onwards. Later, he wrote a great number of TV oaters.
Red Sundown is a really good western (I’m flummoxed why it’s not more popular) with hard characters, put in complex situations, making the hard choices. Rory Calhoun is such a tough guy and Grant Williams, with his constant grin, must have been one of Joker’s forefathers.
