To me, Nieuwegein is ideal. Utrecht is easily accessible, as are IJsselstein, Houten, Vianen, etc. There are multiple small shopping centers in different neighbourhoods to choose from but City Plaza has everything you need. In general, houses and neighbourhoods are good, but not everywhere.

The tram puts you in Utrecht’s city centre in 15-30ish minutes depending on where in Nieuwegein you live. City Plaza is a decent mall, Vreeswijk is a cute place to stroll around through and get food/drinks.
All the houses we looked there were pretty and big and nicely renovated as compared to other places in Goois Area or Amersfoort 10 km radius. I have a house in mind which is pretty close to schools and supermarkets but take 30 mins to reach Utrecht Central.
