Jun 30, 2024 · Laugh, Clown, Laugh is an American silent drama film, released on April 14th, 1928. The movie was directed by Herbert Brenon, and starred Lon Chaney and Loretta Young. The film was based on a 1923 Broadway production, which in turn was based on a 1919 Italian play.
Based on the war-horse stage piece by David Belasco and Tom Cushing, the film casts Chaney as (what else?) an aging circus clown, who adopts an orphaned girl and falls in love with her when she grows up.
LAUGH, CLOWN, LAUGH (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, 1928), produced and directed by Herbert Brenon, returns Lon Chaney to playing the role of a tragic clown, a type of role he earlier portrayed in his earlier screen adaptation to HE WHO GETS SLAPPED (MGM, 1924).
