Echternach (Luxembourgish: Iechternach [ˈiəɕtɐnɑχ] ⓘ or locally Eechternoach) is a commune with town status in the canton of Echternach, in eastern Luxembourg. Echternach lies near the border with Germany, and is the oldest town in Luxembourg.

The imposing Romanesque Basilica has a long and moving history. It was originally built in 700, destroyed by a big fire in 1031 as well as during WW II and rebuilt during the 1950’s. Its crypt houses the tomb of the only saint buried in Luxembourg, Saint Willibrord.
Most tourists come to Echternach for its encompassing abbey. Although rebuilt after serious Second World War damage, this place has largely returned to its past grandeur. A stroll around the vast area still gives visitors a sense of awe. It is also a serene space in Luxembourg's eastern city.

As "capital" of the Mullerthal Region, Echternach is the oldest town in Luxembourg. In 2010, the famous Dancing Procession of Echternach became part of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage. Among the major tourist attractions of the city are the Abbey Museum, the Roman Villa, the Basilica of Saint Willibrod or the cultural centre Trifolion.
