Othello’s heroism on the battlefield also contrasts strongly with Roderigo inciting Cassio to cause a disturbance at the military camp in Cyprus, jeopardizing the stability of the camp over his lust for Desdemona.
Cassio is loyal to Othello and is a great admirer of Desdemona. He is very friendly towards her and Iago uses this to convince Othello they are having an affair. Cassio is in a relationship with a woman called Bianca. She loves him but he does not seem as interested in her. Cassio is wounded by Roderigo at the end of the play but survives.
Cassio says that he does not know Roderigo. Attendants carry off Cassio and Roderigo’s corpse. Emilia enters, and Iago tells her what has happened, adding the explanation, “This is the fruits of whoring” (V.i. 118). He and Emilia chastise Bianca, at whose house Cassio had dined that evening.
Roderigo does listen to Iago, who tells him that Desdemona is in love with Cassio, so Roderigo needs to be valiant and do something that will anger Cassio and make him lose his job. At first Roderigo is incredulous at the idea that Desdemona could be in love with Cassio, but Iago keeps on talking, and Roderigo agrees to his plan.
