While it is possible to take the Trans Canada Highway from Banff to Johnston Canyon, we highly recommend opting for the Bow Valley Parkway route instead.
Apr 7, 2024 · Johnston Canyon is around 25 km from Downtown Banff and 33 km from Lake Louise along the Bow Valley Parkway, which runs parallel to the Trans Canada. There are two ways to reach Johnston Canyon from Banff. The first is to take the TransCanada highway to exit AB-93N (Castle Junction) and turn right onto the Bow Valley Parkway.

It will take approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to drive from Calgary to Johnston Canyon and only 30 minutes from Banff.
Jan 5, 2024 · To reach Johnston Canyon, you can also take the Trans Canada Highway to exit AB-93N (Castle Junction) and turn right onto the Bow Valley Parkway. You’ll find it, approximately six kilometres south of Castle Junction.
From Lake Louise, take the Trans-Canada Highway east to towards Banff, taking exit 50 towards the Bow Valley Parkway, and Johnston Canyon. The drive from Banff and Lake Louise will take approximately 30 minutes and a couple of hours from Calgary.
You can take the scenic route and take the Bow Valley Parkway exit (#1A) and drive along this all the way to Johnston’s Canyon (18.1 km) or else take the Trans-Canada all the way to Castle Mountain Junction and drive back 5.5 km.
Sep 11, 2024 · From Lake Louise, you can take the quick route following the Trans Canada east and take the right turn off at the Highway 93 junction, to Castle Mountain. Take a right onto the Bow Valley Parkway at the stop sign and follow it for 6 km (3.72 mi) to Johnston Canyon.
