Since 1980, the town and its surrounding suburbs have grown substantially. Today, Bel Air is the center for governmental, educational, cultural, medical, and commercial institutions in the county. In the early 20th century, several fires swept through the downtown area, notably in 1900 and 1942.
The Town of Bel Air was one of 16 municipalities honored as a Sustainable Maryland community for 2023 during the Maryland Municipal League's annual Fall Conference at the University of Maryland, College Park.

- See themed art exhibits at Harford Artists Gallery. Located in Armory Marketplace, the Harford Artists Gallery is a non-profit gallery that features a collection of local jewellery, painting, pottery and photography.

- Set camp at Heavenly Waters Park. The Heavenly Waters Park is at one endpoint of the Ma & Pa Heritage trail and hosts a range of events such as flea markets, dog shows, car shows, equestrian events and farm fairs.
- Liriodendron Mansion. The brilliant physician and founding professor of the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Howard Atwood Kelly (1858-1943) built his summer residence in Bel Air in 1898.

- Ma & Pa Heritage Trail. In Harford County, the old corridor of the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad (Ma & Pa) has been turned into a constantly growing trail network with two main segments.
- Bel Air Armory. The most striking sight along Main Street is this National Guard armory, built in 1915 from local Port Deposit granite. As with other armories in the region from this period, this building was designed to resemble a Medieval castle, with decorative arrow loops, a pair of hexagonal towers and crenellations.

Originally named Scott’s Improvement Enlarged, and later Scott’s Old Fields, the town got a more appealing name when it came to be called “Belle Aire.”
