Macau (officially the Province of Macau from 1897 to 1976 and later the Autonomous Region [citation needed] of Macau from 1976 to 1999) was a Portuguese colony from the establishment of the first official Portuguese settlement of Macau in 1557 to its handover to China in 1999.

Sep 20, 2017 · For 450 years, Macau was a colony of Portugal. By the 1800s, pasteis de nata and bolinhos de bacalhau were already the go-to foods in Macanese establishments. In 1976, however, things began to change. The Portuguese government decided to relinquish all of Portugal’s overseas territories.
Drawing on ethnographic research, this article examines the ways in which the calçada portuguesa (“Portuguese pavement”) that the late Portuguese administration developed in Macau (China) was converted into a “cultural item” of Macau’s visual and urban identity.
