  1. Richard Harris was the perfect Dumbledore and it’s so unfortunate he passed away with just two films under his belt. Discussion Rewatching HP, after finishing up Fantastic Beasts SOD, and while Michael Gambon did a great job, truly Harris was the Dumbledore of the books AND I could totally see Jude Laws Dumbledore in him (or vice versa).

  2. Jan 2, 2022 · I personally think both actors portrayed Dumbledore perfectly for the feeling and ambiance of the movies. The first movies with Mr. Harris are mostly lighthearted and whimsical, whereas the movies took a dark turn right around the time Mr. Gambon was hired. 3. JadedStranger722.

  3. I think Harris better encapsulated Dumbledore's appearance and personality, particularly his warm nature, subtle humor, wizened mannerisms, etc. Gambon often felt quite dry and expressionless, and his portrayal in GoF never felt right to me. The one thing Gambon had on Harris was the physical aspect - I can't imagine Harris would've been able ...

  4. Mar 24, 2023 · Richard Harris was book Dumbledore. Michael Gambon's Dumbledore wasn't consistent through the movies (not his fault, it was how he was directed). Under Cuarón he was a "hippie", under Newell he was angry, under Yates he quit wearing glasses altogether. Gambon was a movie-fied version of Dumbledore. 10.

  5. Jun 5, 2020 · Gambon’s Dumbledore had so much more personality and depth. Harris wouldn’t have been able to pull off the powerful Dumbledore particular that we needed in movies 4-6. Neither tbh. Harris couldn't pull off the action scenes in the later books and Gambon didn't even read the books for god's sake.

  6. Apr 30, 2023 · The beard and style of Dumbledore really aged Harris, who was only 72 in the second movie. For comparison, Christopher Lee was 83 and doing lightsaber fights (and had fight scenes in the Hobbit series at 90+). Harrison Ford is 80 with a new Indiana Jones movie coming out. Liam Neeson is 70.

  7. The Dumbledore of the later books is so far removed from the Dumbledore of the earlier ones that I honestly cant comprehend how Richard Harris would have been in the later films. Gambon comes across well as cold and calculating ("raised like a pig for slaughter") but I just dont see how Harris would have faired because his Dumbledore is so kind and gentle.

  9. Jan 10, 2022 · Harris was a lovely Dumbledore meant for the light heartedness of the first 2 movies, but like a lot of people said, I can’t imagine him dealing with the darkness of the later years. That being said, I also could never have imagined the Dumbledore of the first two books to be capable of all that either, and so maybe that was the point of it all.

  10. Jul 30, 2013 · Harris seemed better suited for Dumbledore's cerebral and eccentric side, while Gambon was better for Dumbledore's action side. That said, Harris is still how I imagine Dumbledore. When reading, it's so much easier to imagine Harris saying most of Dumbledore's lines. Harris handled Dumbledore better, I think.
