A working place is the actual few square feet/metres where the work (or any sort) is done, e.g. a desk, a workbench, an oven, a cockpit, etc. I seem to remember "working place" being specifically referenced in Health and Safety legislation.

To "get started working," "started working," and "got down to work" would be closer to "begin working"; note that these are all more "conversational"—that is, more suited to informal contexts—than the more direct "begin working."
