William Cottrell is a former Ph.D. candidate at Caltech who was convicted of conspiracy to arson in 2005 for his involvement in the Earth Liberation Front (ELF) attacks on SUVs and a Hummer dealership. He was released in 2011 after his convictions were overturned by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
