    • Superman. As directed by Lethal Weapon auteur Richard Donner, Superman lacks the style that made Tim Burton’s Batman ascend to levels of expressive art via a number of touches worthy of Fritz Lang.
    • Superman II. The Richard Lester cut of this film is not exactly unpleasant, but leans just a bit too hard on the zany humor that has always been the director’s stock-in-trade.
    • Superman Returns. With the possible exception of X2, Bryan Singer rarely comes off as so assured, so buoyantly expressive as he does in Superman Returns, which casts Brandon Routh as the favorite son of Krypton and a gleefully campy Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor.
    • Man of Steel. The most frustrating thing about Man of Steel is that it’s got several very interesting ideas going on within its overblown runtime. Unfortunately, almost all of those ideas are solely embedded in David S. Goyer’s script, and even then, aren’t developed to the extent that they can surpass Zack Snyder’s pageant of all things brown and gray.
    • Superman: The Movie (1978) Of course, if you’ve gotten this far, you know that none of the sequels, reboots, re-envisionings, or remakes ever approached the promise inherent in this movie.
    • Man of Steel (2013) Please put away your pitchforks and hear me out. Yes, it’s a fairly joyless affair, and in its desperate attempt to prove that it’s not its predecessor (the glacially paced and action-free Superman Returns) it sacrifices Superman’s optimistic heart on the altar of almost gleeful, consequence-free violence.
    • Superman II (1980) To quote Valerie Perrine’s Eve Teschmacher in Superman: The Movie, “ummm…I know I’m gonna get rapped in the mouth for this,” but Superman II is not the best Superman movie.
    • Superman Returns (2006) In many ways, Batman v Superman, Superman Returns, and Superman III are equally flawed. It could be argued that Superman III or even BvS could be considered the superior film since it at least tried to do something remarkably different with the Superman formula.
    • Superman II (1981) Shot back-to-back with "Superman: The Movie," "Superman II" sees the return of the Metropolis Marvel. Long before the MCU established the tradition of ending films by having your lead square off against a similarly-powered version of themselves, this movie had Superman confront three Kryptonians.
    • Superman: The Movie (1978) The tag line for "Superman: The Movie" was "You'll believe a man can fly." The entire film hinged on getting that right; if you can get the audience to invest in an outlandish premise like an alien superhero, you've won the battle.
    • Superman Returns (2006) Effectively a cold reboot of the franchise, with director Bryan Singer making an indirect sequel to "Superman II," "Superman Returns" revolves around Superman's return to Earth after a five-year absence.
    • Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021) There's a scene in "Superman III" in which Superman takes a lump of coal, squeezes it in his grip, and produces a diamond — an apt metaphor for Zack Snyder's "Justice League" cut.
