Pinjar (Punjabi: ਪਿੰਜਰ; English/Translation: The Skeleton) is a 1950 Punjabi -language novel written by notable Indian poet and novelist Amrita Pritam.In 2009, Pinjar was translated by Khushwant Singh in English. The novel depicts the conditions and nature of the Indian society during the partition of India in 1947.
Pinjar tells the story of Puro, a young woman of Hindu background, living a lovely life circling the time of the partition of 1947 with her family. Puro is betrothed to a wealthy, sweet young man, Ramchand, from a promising family.
"Pinjar" is set in the time of the 1947 partition. Rashid abducts Puro, a young Hindu woman, as revenge on her family over an ancestral dispute. She manages to escape but her family turns her away and she is forced to return to Rashid and marry him.
