To me, "the beginning of March" means the beginning. If I rent an apartment and agree that I'll be moving in at the beginning of March, I would expect to be able to do so on the first of the month.

The reason that I write "25th March" is that if a year follows it (as in "25th March 2009") it strikes me as looking better that "March 25th 2009". It's pure aesthetics as in number + letters + number pure personal choice. I wasn't taught anything like this.

  10. Jun 1, 2014 · Jun 1, 2014. #3. I think it's an adverb issue, but I'm not a grammarian. "last March" tells when, in the past, and modifies went (to go, in the infinitive). "in" makes it into a prepositional phrase (in last March), and apart from that, it doesn't work with the past when you are talking about remembering something.
