At present the department is engaged in teaching and research and has an one hundred percent placement record in the state and outside. At present the degrees being offered by the department are MPEd and doctoral degrees.
The university contains 26 postgraduate departments and a campus that covers 353 acres. 204 colleges are currently connected to Mangalore University. According to the university's official website, its goal is to foster critical thinking in students so they can be imaginative and creative.

To cater the needs of people of Kodagu in higher education, Mangalore University started PG Centre at Chikka Aluvara. The PG programmes in Microbiology and Biochemistry were shifted in 2014 to new campus spreading across 70.47 acre of land and named as Jnana Kaveri PG Centre.
The main campus has 28 academic departments offering 47 Masters and 33 Doctoral Programmes spread over four faculties: Arts, Commerce, Education and Science & Technology with 12 PG programmes also offered at its Postgraduate Centre.
