Gillingham ( / ˈdʒɪlɪŋəm / ⓘ JIL-ing-əm) is a town in the unitary authority area of Medway, in the ceremonial county of Kent, England. Gillingham (with a soft G, as in "gel") is a town on the River Medway in the north of the English county of Kent. Together with its neighbouring towns of Rochester and Chatham it forms a large urban area known as the Medway Towns.
Gillingham is an important retail centre serving the local community. It has a twice weekly market which is ideal for the bargain hunters to wander around. The town has strong maritime and military connections with the nearby Historic Dockyard in Chatham and Royal Engineers barracks based in the town.
