    He campaigned for the Indian National Congress with his brother, D. K. Shivakumarwho has been an active member of INC and MLA since the 1980s. His first major political break was in 2013 when he won the by-election and became a Member of Parliament (MP) from Bangalore Rural (Ramanagara) constituency after H. D. Kumaraswamy resigned.
