And for sure, he does a phenomenal job at that, taking you through the gyrations of human emotions. And the story, for him, seems to be no more than an excuse. Read Rāmāyaṇa to enjoy the beauty, to immerse yourself in the narration, and not just to know the story or its nuances.
Ramayana calls itself a kavya, akhyana and itihasa. Valmiki wanted to portray the life of an ideal man, not an incarnation. Rama being treated as an avatara came about gradually from prince of Ayodhya to national hero to an incarnation of Visnu.
The Ramayana is an ancient Sanskrit epic, and the older of the two Great Epics of India. It is probably the most influential Indian text, having local versions in almost all Indian languages, as well as being the national epic of Thailand, Laos, and being an important source of cultural influence in countries like Indonesia.
