    SHINee (샤이니, pronounced "'shine-ee'" Japanese: シャイニー) is a four-member boy group formed by SM Entertainment in 2008. They made their debut on May 25 on SBS's Inkigayo with their promotional song "Replay". The group started as a five-member group with Onew, Jonghyun, Key, Minho and Taemin.

    The group's name is a combination of "shine", meaning light, and the suffix "ee", therefore meaning "one who recieves light".

    2008: Debut with Replay, The SHINee World, and first music show win

    On May 19, 2008, SM Entertainment introduced SHINee and its five members: Onew, Jonghyun, Key, Minho, and Taemin, as a "contemporary-R&B boy group with the goal of becoming trendsetters in all areas of music, fashion, and dance." The group's debut mini album, Replay, was released three days later on May 22. On May 25, the group held their debut stage at SBS's Inkigayo. By the end of the first-half of 2008, the mini album had sold nearly 18,000 copies in South Korea. SHINee made their first-ever comeback with the release of their first full-length album, The SHINee World, on August 29. Its lead single, "Love Like Oxygen", was released on August 22 and is a remake of Martin Hoberg Hedegaard's song "Show the World". The song helped SHINee achieve their first music show win on September 18 at Mnet's M! Countdown. On October 30, SHINee released a repackage of The SHINee World, titled Amigo.

    2009: "Rookie grand slam", Romeo, and 2009, Year of Us

    At South Korea's major year-end awarded in 2008 and beginning-of-year awards in 2009, SHINee became the first-ever artist to achieve a "rookie grand slam", winning every Rookie of the Year award at said award ceremonies. On May 18, SHINee released "Juliette", the lead single from their then-upcoming second mini album. The group's second mini album, titled Romeo, was released a week later, on May 25. SHINee's third mini album, 2009, Year of Us, was released digitally on October 19 and physically on October 25. The mini album's lead single, "Ring Ding Dong" was previously released on October 14. The music video for "Ring Ding Dong" remains SHINee's most-viewed music video, with over 163 million views on YouTube as of 2023. Following the success of "Ring Ding Dong", in December the group began promoting "Jo Jo" as the second promotional single from their third mini album.

    2010: Lucifer, Hello and first concert tour

    On July 21, 2010, SHINee released their second full-length album, Lucifer, along with its title track of the same name. The album went on the become the sixth-highest selling album in South Korea for the year with over 120,000 copies. A repackage of Lucifer, titled Hello, was released on October 1. On December 26, the group embarked on their first-ever headlining concert tour, titled SHINee World, at Yoyogi National Gymnasium in Tokyo, Japan. The tour eventually concluded on November 24, 2011, at Osaka-jō Hall, attracting 110,000 fans in total.
