In India, mental hospital (or asylums) was entirely a British concept except for some ancient collections of curious humanity such as that of Shahdaula's Chauhas at Gujarat and in Punjab. The earliest record of institutions for the care of mentally ill in India can be traced back to the reign of Md. Khilji in the 15 th century.
