Udupi Rajagopalacharya Ananthamurthy (21 December 1932 – 22 August 2014) was an Indian contemporary writer and critic in the Kannada language. He was born in Thirtahalli Taluk and is considered one of the pioneers of the Navya movement. [1]

The Plot. Samskara begins with the death of a sinful Brahmin, Naranappa, in Durvasapura, a close-knitted community of Brahmins. Naranappa has renounced Brahmanical ways and spent his time with Muslims; enjoying his time drinking, fishing in the temple pond and eating meat.

U.R. Ananthamurthy remained a visible and articulate icon of modernity in the Kannada context despite his determined efforts to locate himself as critical insider to tradition rather than an advocate of modernity. His classic novel Samskara written nearly fifty years ago continues to initiate.
जीवन परिचय. उनका जन्म शिमोगा जिले (मैसूर) के तिर्थहल्ली ताल्ल्ुका के मेलिगे में हुआ। उनकी शिक्षा दुर्वासापुरा के पारंपरिक संस्कृत पाठशाला में शुरु हुई। इसके बाद की शिक्षा तिर्थहल्ली और मैसूर में हुई। मैसूर विश्वविद्यालय से परास्नातक की उपाधि हासिल करने के बाद आगे के अध्ययन के लिए वे राष्ट्रमंडल छात्रवृत्ति लेकर इंगलैंड चले गए। उन्होंने १९६६ ई.
Eminent writer, scholar and cultural critic, Professor U. R. Ananthamurthy is the recipient of the Jnanpith Award and the Padma Bhushan. More recently he was on the shortlist for the International Man Booker Prize.
Samskara was first published in 1965, and in 1970 it was made into a film. The narrative revolves around a Brahmin agrahara, Naranappa, situated in Konkan region. The themes explored by the novel are death, caste, religious values, culture, traditions and their relationship with the changing world.
