Olav V (born July 2, 1903, Appleton House, near Sandringham, Norfolk, Eng.—died Jan. 17, 1991, Oslo, Nor.) was the king of Norway (1957–91), succeeding his father, King Haakon VII. Olav was educated at the Norwegian military academy and at the University of Oxford in England.

It was difficult for the Crown Prince to leave his country, and he offered to remain in Norway. Most of all, he wanted to fight on the front lines, but the Government strongly advised against it.
