Sometimes, you will have to find these reasons during the interview, because it might be things like team structure, languages they work with, mentoring programs, ability to set your own schedule, clear direction, etc.

  6. Quite apart from any notes or records, at the very least, the hiring manager(s) in Dept Y will surely want to ask the interviewers from Dept X if the recall why you didn't get hired. It could make a big difference depending on whether they say "oh he was excellent, but we hired Fred instead because he seemed even better" or "oh, that guy was an idiot".

Inform the interviewer that you're interested in narrowing your focus to whatever your specialty is, and want to limit how much you are involved in running things all the way from the top.
