  1. Apr 30, 2020 · Song of Achilles is more of a romance, and generally more eventful than Circe because the main characters aren’t in prison. I don’t like romance but I loved the romance in this book, and it’s the main appeal of the book. If you appreciate Greek mythology, you should read it, it’s a very good “adaptation” of sorts. Reply.

  2. The first thing we need to know about The Song of Achilles is that it is a retelling of The Iliad. The Iliad is an epic poem from ancient Greece that tells part of the story of the Trojan War – we’ll talk about that later. The Iliad – and it’s companion piece, The Odyssey – are the foundation of western literature and are the earliest ...

  3. song’, because 1) one of the most dear memories of achilles to patroclus, as mentioned in his conversation with thetis, is of achilles playing the lyre and singing beautifully, and 2) it reminds me of the whole point about how greek heroes crave to be immortalised in hymns and epics, to have a stanza dedicated to their heroic doings or even just a line. so the existence of a song for and of achilles honours, glorifies and commemorates his existence, which is, well, a major purpose of ...

  4. Jun 6, 2022 · The Song of Achilles tries so hard to be queer and multi racial that it ends up as fetishy, such as when the narration describes Achilles's skin as "the color of fresh olive oil." This sounds like the author is fetishizing "non whiteness," and it's cringe to describe "non white" ethnicitites with references to that culture's food, this is an inch away from calling a Hispanic woman a spicy chimichanga.

  5. Nov 11, 2020 · Jacob elordi as achilles. Joaquin phoenix as Odysseus. Guys, most depictions of Patroclus are fairly dark-skinned. I don’t think Timothee Chalamet or Tom Holland are the right look here — they’re too much like European Disney prince looks already, and that’s more Achilles’ look.

  6. May 17, 2021 · The Aeneid, Virgil's hero fights to claim the king’s daughter, Lavinia, with whom he is destined to found an empire. Lavinia herself never speaks a word. Now, Ursula K. Le Guin gives Lavinia a voice in a novel that takes us to the half-wild world of ancient Italy, when Rome was a muddy village near seven hills.

  7. Aug 5, 2021 · BoysOnTheRoof. Is The Song of Achilles good? So, I've been seeing this book get recommended here quite a few times, and it seems like a great book. I've been thinking about giving it as a gift to my father, who really likes Greek Mythology and has even read the Odyssey. My only concern is weather the book has some teen vibes to it.

  8. May 8, 2021 · If you're interested in Greek drama and biblical-like stories, I would recommend O Brother, where Art Thou?, Troy, Clash of the Titans, Jason and the Argonauts, or even Spartacus. Once again, I don't know much about Song of Achilles besides the general era in which it's set, but my personal favorite book is Gone with the Wind which is obviously ...

  9. Mar 18, 2021 · I enjoyed the book, but it's biggest selling point is that you get to make the 1000th post on this sub about having finished it and "being emotionally destroyed" or "wow just wow". If you don't like it, it's okay to cut your losses and move on. (Plus, you won't make one of those posts, which is a win for humanity. 34.

  10. Sep 10, 2023 · Other than Song of Achilles, she has one other published novel and a few short stories. Circe centers and fleshes out a minor female character from the Odyssey who appears briefly as a spiteful witch. I thought Miller's characterization of Circe herself was beautiful and thoughtful. I feel the same about Song of Achilles.
