The Sri Aurobindo Ashram (French: Ashram de Sri Aurobindo) is a spiritual community (ashram) located in Pondicherry, in the Indian territory of Puducherry. The ashram grew out of a small community of disciples who had gathered around Sri Aurobindo after he withdrew from politics and settled in Pondicherry in 1910.
In 1926, with the help of his spiritual collaborator, the Mother, he founded the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. Among his many writings are The Life Divine, The Synthesis of Yoga and Savitri. Sri Aurobindo left his body on 5 December 1950.
Founded in 1926, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram has grown, under the Mother's guidance, from a small group of two dozen disciples into a large and diverse community of almost 1600 members. Counting the 400 students of the Centre of Education and the hundreds of devotees who live nearby, the larger ashram community consists of more than 2000 people.
The Sri Aurobindo Ashram Publication Department publishes the works of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother and works by disciples on their life and teachings, in over 15 languages. The Publication Department's distribution unit is SABDA.
The Sri Aurobindo Ashram is one of the most famous and wealthy ashrams in India. The Ashram is within walking distance of Manakula Vinayagar Temple and Rock Beach. Through permanent exhibits of photographs, captions, tests, videos, and books, the center also provides an introduction to Sri Aurobindo's vision and The Mother's spiritual practice.
At the Ashram main building, under the service-tree shaded courtyard lies the Samadhi, a white marble shrine where the bodies of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother are laid to rest. The Ashram is administered by the Sri Aurobindo Ashram Trust.
The 4th April is the Ashram New Year, date of Sri Aurobindo’s arrival in Pondicherry. The 24th April is the date of the Mother’s final return to Pondicherry in 1920. The 15th August is Sri Aurobindo’s birthday.
Sri Aurobindo Complex situated in J.P. Nagar 1st Phase, Bangalore occupies an area of approximately one and a quarter acre and functions as an experimental laboratory in service of the Truth as envisaged by Sri Aurobindo & The Mother.
