The comforting nature of the show comes from its setting: a school, a community college of dubious prestige where "lesser people" find each other and find value in their own messy existence. They have adventures and discoveries in the setting of the school, they fight, they fall in love.
Interested in acting at an early age, she began her career performing in community theater shows at the Jewish Community Center in Los Feliz. Her very first role was "Toto" in the Wizard of Oz. After graduating from South Pasadena High School in 2001; Alison attended California Institute of the Arts where she received her BFA in Acting.

Her big break came in the form of Community (2009), wherein she played the role of Britta Perry for six seasons until curtains came down on the show. In 2015, she also appeared in the HBO series Girls (2012) with a recurring role as Mimi-Rose Howard.
Writer Stephen Merchant has stated the idea for the show came to him as his mother used to do work overseeing community service, and thought about how having people from different walks of life placed into the same situation would make an interesting plot line.
