The fjord is divided in two by the narrow Drøbak sound. The area to the north is known as the inner Oslofjord, and to the south the Outer Oslofjord.
Sentrum, literally Centre, is the core of Oslo inside the first ring road, plus the area around the Royal Palace and Tjuvholmen island. This is the area around Oslo's main street, Karl Johan street, and the Akershus fortress overlooking the harbour and the great Oslo fjord.
Due north of Grünerløkka, Torshov inherits much of its neighbour's inner city feel, albeit in a more shabby state. Nydalen and surrounding areas are popular with students at BI (Norwegian Business School), while Ullevål-Hageby is worth a look for those studying or working at the University of Oslo.
Each of the islands in the innermost part of the fjord has its own characteristics and history. At Hovedøya you can glance at the busy city while relaxing on the beach. Take along a picknick basket or enjoy a snack from the charming cafés on the islands. Hopp on bord a fjord cruise and enjoy the scenery.
