Feb 8, 2024 · Venki Ramakrishnan was born in India to a family of scientists. He had already earned a Ph.D. in physics when his attention turned to molecular biology. As a postdoctoral fellow at Yale, he began his research on the structure and function of the ribosome, a major structure in all cells that interprets genetic instructions to produce proteins.
Welcome to the Ramakrishnan Lab web page. Our laboratory is interested in the structure and function of the ribosome, the large protein-RNA complex that synthesizes proteins using genetic instructions encoded in the mRNA template.
Venki Ramakrishnan shared the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Thomas Steitz and Ada Yonath for studies on the structure and function of the ribosome, the large complexes in all cells that use the information in our genes to make the thousands of proteins needed for life.
