The University of Peradeniya is heir to the University of Ceylon which was established in 1942. It is the largest and best-endowed university in Sri Lanka. It has eight faculties (schools) and 72 academic departments, an undergraduate enrolment of approximately 9000 and a postgraduate enrolment of approximately 2000.

The university is in the Central Province, 8 km (5.0 mi) from the centre of Kandy (the historic capital of the last kingdom of Sri Lanka) and about 110 km (68 mi) from Colombo. The Botanic Gardens of Peradeniya is close by. The university spans nearly 700 ha (1,700 acres) in the Mahaweli flood plain.

History & Heritage. The University of Peradeniya is the heir to a seventy year old University tradition which commenced with the inception of the University of Ceylon, the first institution of its kind established in Colombo on 1 July 1942. It moved to the banks of Mahaweli River, the longest in the Country, in 1952.
The Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya is the first engineering faculty in Sri Lanka. It was founded in 1950 and shifted to the present location at Peradeniya in 1964.
