May 6, 2009 · The story is loosely borrowed from Douglas Fairbanks Sr.’s “The Thief of Bagdad” (1924), itself a great film. Fairbanks Jr. told me it was his father’s favorite. One major change is crucial: In the silent film, the thief and the romantic lead were one and the same, played by Fairbanks.
When Prince Ahmad (John Justin) is blinded and cast out of Bagdad by the nefarious Jaffar (Conrad Veidt), he joins forces with the scrappy thief Abu (the incomparable Sabu, in his definitive role) to win back his royal place, as well as the heart of a beautiful princess (June Duprez).
