Lenin wrote this book in 1917 to explain the Marxist attitude to the state and the tasks of the proletariat in the revolution. He criticised the opportunist distortions of Kautsky and other social-chauvinists, and analysed the experience of the Russian revolutions of 1905 and 1917.
Lenin criticizes the distortion of Marxism by the bourgeoisie and the opportunists, who claim that the state reconciles classes or is the reality of the ethical idea. He quotes Engels to show that the state is a product of the irreconcilability of class antagonisms and an organ of class rule.
