Cultured Martha Evans, just widowed en route, and her young adult daughter Hilary, have just arrived at the Stockmen's Exhibition in St. Louis. Their purpose is to introduce Hereford cattle into the US, they having brought a number of head from their native England for sale.
The Rare Breed (1966) is that rare Western that is actually about cattle and the cattle business. Specifically, its plot deals with the introduction of Hereford cattle into the United States in 1884. The Herefords were a stocky, white-faced breed from Britain which produced better beef than the American longhorn.
