Mar 29, 2010 · Having googled it, it seems that he did say 'What a maroon' and it's been explained subsequently as being a deliberate mispronunciation of 'moron'. However given the rather questionable attitudes to race in America at the time, it's quite possible it was a racial slur.

A dribbling idiot would have been a person with severely limited intellectual capacities who mainly sat and drooled, not having the self-control or self-awareness to avoid doing it or wipe it away.

You need to choose whether you need a verb or a noun. It is true that ignorant is more commonly used than ignoramus, but I don't think ignoramus is old fashioned.
