Midway is the name of the atoll, which is comprised of three main islands, Sand, Spit, and Eastern; as well as smaller ones. Atolls form as oceanic volcanoes erupt and grow above the water line, then erode to sea level. In the case of Midway, that process began 28 million years ago, making it the second oldest of the Hawaiian chain.
But this, the discovery of a Japanese aircraft carrier that took part in Pearl Harbor and Midway, has to be the most significant naval archaeological discovery yet, historically speaking. As a historian, seeing the images of the twisted and bent hull of the ship that launched aviators to attack a sleeping American Pacific Fleet on December 7, 1941, is impressive to say the least.
The Midway battle sequence isn’t so much a climax as a relief. I guess Emmerich felt that Americans simply don’t know enough about the war in the Pacific to dispense with all these preliminaries. Maybe he’s right, but the result is a by-the-numbers slog through selected episodes in the early months of the war that has all the charm of a Wikipedia article.
