On 17 July 2014 Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was brought down over eastern Ukraine. The flight was on its way from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. On board were 283 passengers and 15 crew members. Among the passengers were 196 Dutch nationals. In the aftermath the government set three priorities: repatriating and identifying the victims, establishing the cause of the crash and conducting a criminal investigation.
The three investigations by the OVV. The OVV investigated: the circumstances surrounding the downing of flight MH17; the decision-making process regarding flight routes; and. the procedure for compiling passenger lists. In October 2015 the OVV published reports of these investigations.
On 28 September 2016 the Public Prosecution Service issued a statement informing the media and next of kin about the status of the investigation. In 2020, the Netherlands lodged an application with the ECtHR against the Russian Federation regarding Russia’s role in the downing of flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine on 17 July 2014.

May 25, 2018 · Yes. No. The Netherlands and Australia hold Russia responsible for its part in the downing of flight MH17. The government took a decision on this matter, on the proposal of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Stef Blok. Our two countries have informed Russia of their decision.
Oct 11, 2024 · Update 11 October, 13:05. This liveblog is closed. On 4 and 5 October, the Ministries of Defense and Foreign Affairs carried out two repatriation flights from Lebanon. On 9 and 10 October, people who had registered with Foreign Affairs were able to leave the country via Australian and Belgian repatriation flights.
