Herbert Henry Lehman (March 28, 1878 – December 5, 1963) was an American financier and Democratic politician who served as the 45th governor of New York from 1933 to 1942 and represented New York in the United States Senate from 1949 until 1957. Early life and career.
The Birth of a Political Life. Herbert Lehman became actively involved in Democratic Party politics in the 1920s through his association with Governor Al Smith, eventually serving as one of Smith’s top lieutenants in the Governor’s efforts to win the presidency in 1928.
Herbert H. Lehman served two terms (1929-1933) as lieutenant governor of New York State under the administration of Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt, who referred to him as “my good right arm.”
From 1943 until 1946, as director of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration, he directed the largest international relief effort in history: 24 million tons of food, clothing, and medical supplies to 500 million victims of world war.
