  1. Gulf Western is regarded as low quality/cheap oil in the automotive trade, along with a brand called Hi-Tec oils. Having said that I've never tested it and have no proof other than grapevine gossip and anecdotes. For the small price difference I'd stick with a reputable brand. User #251166 3911 posts.

  2. They say oils aint oils, so whats the worst oil you've used in your car. For me it would have to be Castrol and Valvoline. The best would have to be Shell Helix and Mobil1. Never used anything other than castrol, give my little mirage a mighty thrashing non stop hasnt seized up with Castrol oil so its great :).

  3. Briggs n Stratton specify a monoweight 30 oil. this is best replaced with a 5w-40. eg. Shell Helix Ultra 5w-40 is a good fairly cheap choice. I've used it in quite a few turbo cars and still use it if I run out of internet supplied Mobil 0w-40 (euro formula).

  4. edited 2019-Dec-29, 2:27 pm AEST. O.P. SYN–X 3000™ is a high performance, high quality, semi synthetic premium grade passenger car oil. Is it any good for a Ford BA XR6T, or should I stick with a full synthetic oil? My BA isnt modified in any way, and I drive "sensibly". This is a SN/CF oil, but its not recommended for older cars with flat ...

  5. Penrite HPR GAS 10 10W-50 is suitable for Ford also. Shell Helix HX7 10W-40. Nulon Full Synthetic 10W-40 Hi-Tech Fast Flowing Engine Oil. (HPR5 is also available) lol dunno about these other suitable oils: Gulf Western Premium Gold Engine Oil – 15W-40. Chief Cherokee Engine Oil – 10W-40.

  6. Bob will suggest to use the thinnest oil possible (especially the W number, to minimise engine wear when cold)... Many others disagree with this theory though. But FYI Bob is suggesting 5w30 for your engine effectively, even though 10w40 is probably permissable by your owner's manual.

  7. Castrol are very good at marketing. ;) Just whatever 10W40 semi-synthetic oil is on special will be fine. About $20-25/5L is the going rate for semi-synthetic oil on special. Shell Helix HX7 semi-synthetic is often well priced, Super Cheap have it for $23.39. I reckon Ryco filter would be fine.

  8. The 2nd number is a measure of viscosity at 100degC. All oils will be thicker when cooler regardless if they are single grade oils (eg SAE90), or multigrade. As for what oil to use, check the manual, if it allows 20W-50 for your ambient temp, then it will be safe to use. User #16596 1498 posts.

  9. FWIW, The N46 engine had problems when using cheap oil or missed oil change due to blocked oil passages so, consider the oil type change very carefully, you could be making a small problem into a much bigger problem. Thanks for the helpful info. You are certainly right with the blocked passages. I previously had the CCV replaced due to blockage.

  10. In that case buying the synthetic oil for $30/5L on special (like the castrol edge that was recently on sale which has the Mercedes approval) and changing it at 25,000km is more economic than buying the semi synthetic oil at $20/5L on special and changing it at 10,000km. :) User #483131 1731 posts.
