Girton has a proud history as an institution that changed the world. Founded in 1869 by Emily Davies and Barbara Bodichon, the College is distinctive for being Britain’s first residential college for the degree level education of women.

In 1939–1940, Girton gave a new home to 56 women students and two staff evacuated from Queen Mary College in London until they found more spacious accommodation in Cambridge. Many Girtonians shared rooms to make space for the visitors and, in 2006, some Queen Mary evacuees came back to Girton for a reunion.

The Cambridge History Faculty is one of the best in the world and Girton undergraduates participate fully in it. Students can study the whole range of papers offered in the Cambridge History course: everything from Anglo-Saxon invasions to twentieth-century civil rights movements.
During Full Term, the Choir’s principal function is to sing the liturgy in Girton’s Chapel. This includes Choral Evensong every Sunday, and Compline (a beautiful, meditative evening service) every Tuesday, and Vespers every Friday. For this, the Choir rehearses just twice a week.
