Giovanni da Pian del Carpini (born c. 1180, Pian del Carpine?, near Perugia, Umbria [Italy]—died August 1, 1252, Antivari [Bar], Dalmatia?) was a Franciscan friar, the first noteworthy European traveler in the Mongol empire, to which he was sent on a formal mission by Pope Innocent IV.

Giovanni da Pian del Carpini was a Franciscan friar who had been selected by the Pope largely based on his previous experience. In light of the hardships he had faced with his vow of poverty and his religious background, Carpini was well suited to the challenges that his journey would present.

Born at Pian di Carpine (now called della Magione), near Perugia, Umbria, 1182; died probably in 1252. Having entered the Franciscan Order he was a companion of Cæsar of Spires, the leader of the second mission of the Franciscans to Germany in 1221.
