Jun 30, 2019 · So Gayatri is the mother of all Vedic mantras (that is the Vedas proclaim them so). It has twenty-four aksaras (letters or syllables) and three feet, each foot of eight syllables. That is why the mantra is called "Tripada Gayatri". Each foot is the essence of a Veda. Thus Gayatri is the essence of Rgveda, Yajurveda and Samaveda.
Oct 13, 2020 · Gayatri is just the name of a chandas in Rig Veda. There is no goddess Gayatri in Rig Veda. There has been a long tradition of personifying the Vedic chandases as goddesses. Just as Gayatri is made into a goddess, Brhati, Jagati, Shakvari are also made into goddesses. However, Gayatri chandas is the most frequently used meter in Rig Veda.

By the way, the same did happen in the life of Sri Sitaramdas Omkarnath. Whenever He wanted to do the Gayatri Japa, He could just utter OM and then invariably got immersed in samadhi.

Just for completeness - The Gayatri mantra that Sri Devi Bhagavatam contains in the first or second chapter (forgot and can't recall the exact chapter off the top of my head) is not the same one (s) in the Rg Veda. It is a different mantra (sarva chaitanya rupAm tAmAdhyam vidyAm cha DhImahI | buddhim yAna prachOdayAt ||).
