Bommalattam is a type of puppetry using inanimate objects from Tamil Nadu. While the origin of the art is uncertain, it has existed as an art form for years. It uses various doll marionettes, manipulated by rods and strings by puppeteers behind a screen, lighted by traditional lamps. It is usually accompanied by music and story telling.

Bommalattam (transl. Puppet Show) is 1968 Indian Tamil-language comedy film, directed by Muktha Srinivasan and produced by V. Ramaswamy. The screenplay was written by Cho Ramaswamy from a story by Madurai Thirumaran.
Bommalattam (transl. The Puppet show) was a 2012 Indian-Tamil-language soap opera that aired on Sun TV from 15 October 2012 to 22 October 2016 for 1,150 episodes. The show starred Sirija, Shreekumar, Mohammed Absar and Preethi Sanjeev. [1] It was produced by San Media Ltd and directed by Shiva.K and Stalin. The title track was composed by Dhina and sung by Haricharan with lyrics by Vairamuthu.

The Bommalattam puppets are the largest, heaviest, and the most articulate of all traditional Indian marionettes. A puppet may be as big as 4.5 feet in height weighing about ten kilograms. Bommalattam theatre has elaborate preliminaries which are divided into four parts – Vinayak Puja, Komali, Amanattam, and Pusenkanattam.

In olden days, bommalattam was a means of mass communication meant to educate the masses about important issues that needed their understanding and participation. It also had aspects of the mass leader preaching to his audience, trying to reach out to many from one point of enunciation.
Bommalattam, or puppetry in Tamil, is one of the oldest forms of story-telling; a folk form with which Indians have entertained themselves down the ages. Tamil Nadu is a popular hub of Bommalattam which is believed to have a 4000 year history.
