Battered means dipped in a batter, usually a mixture of egg, milk and flour, then fried. batter [sth] vtr (cover with batter) recouvrir de pâte vtr. We batter the shrimp before deep-frying them.

The beer gives a special flavor to the batter, and also makes the batter lighter and fluffier. 3) Pané apparently means "breaded" or "coated with bread crumbs" before frying. It's a little different from battering.

You could describe something as 'battered by time', but this is obviously a metaphor and more poetic. This isn't really a linguistic question but one of interpretation.

A dress will not change shape from being struck because there is nothing stiff about it holding a specific shape, like a car has or even a hat, like in that picture above.

I thought maybe the variety of meanings I found online had to do with some difference between AmE and BrE, since the McGraw-Hill Dictionary of American Idioms and Phrasal Verbs is the source that gives the "battered or bruised" meaning.
