Sports are quite prominent at Bates, but not in excess. Plenty of attention is given to the arts. The Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary is 372 acres and is literally across the street from Bates.

Mar 21, 2018 · Bates’ campus is beautiful. There is a bird sanctuary adjacent, and kids run and hike there. Of the three schools, it is generally acknowledged that Bates has the friendliest atmosphere. Traditionally, of the three, Bates has the more creative and arty vibe, but at least 40% of Bates kids are athletes and there are a lot of outdoor activities.

Aug 1, 2023 · I ended up committing to Bates ED1 early in my senior year. It took a great deal of stress off of me having chosen a college enabling me to focus on gaining skills that would later prove useful instead of obsessing over college applications. I was a “recruited” track and cross country runner, meaning I had reached out to Bates’ track coach and he assured me after a pre-read that I would be accepted and he would love to have me on the team. Apr 25, 2013 · There’s one caveat…. Smith Hall is an all-freshman dorm which is generally regarded as the worst of the first-year living options. It’s arranged in quads (so you have three roommates), and is often seen as kind of a “party” dorm. I will say so that MOST people still love Smith and remember it with great affection.

While I know a lot about Conn, I do not know that much about Bates (I was unable to visit during COVID).

Middlebury is the first school in the country to grant a degree to an African American - Alexander Twilight, who graduated in 1823. That over 30 years before Bates was even founded.
