Aug 13, 2024 · Levon Helm was born on May 26, 1940, outside Elaine (Phillips County) to Nell and Diamond Helm. He had two sisters and one brother. He grew up in Marvell (Phillips County) working on the family cotton farm but was always encouraged to play and sing music at home and in church.

Levon began playing for Ronnie Hawkins, also an Arkansas native, after graduating high school. In 1968, the Band released their critically acclaimed debut album, Music from the Big Pink. They continued to record and perform together until 1976, when one of the members decided he’d had enough of life on the road.
His return to Arkansas following the tour was thought to be the drummer’s last stint in the business. But a new beginning for the artist started not long after his initial departure from music. Helm returned with his former bandmates with Dylan influencing the group back together.
